England Manager 2008

I have been wondering, with all the rumors that Mourinho might take the job, am I going to be wrong for once so quickly I said my piece. Luckily no! This was his piece on Soccernet. Phew. I thought they had me. Anyway, now for the betting of the worst role to take on! Capello seems to be the favorites down in UK with this guardian piece. Not to mention the odds tracker (Huh! They actually keep track of it.). But then again, I have always cited that Capello is a top quality coach, even with Lippi as his rival. The only thing is Lippi probably would not want to take it, and Capello is not blind to see what happened to Sven and others. Of course, the prestige and honor is really another thing, so who knows. Lippi probably won't anyway, unless it is some big, big, BIG contract that dwarfs John Terry's salary, so of the top 5 candidates, only Capello is the one I think will take it.

Of course, there might be others, so from the list...Houllier and Redknapp are my picks of the likely ones with
Hodgson as an outside chance with his experience. Houllier doesn't get my fancy, (Rigid tactics, good coach but conservative and not that brilliant of a tactician.), but his background is cleaner than Redknapp in terms of whether they are actually being accused. Poor Harry got the sting, else he probably would have gotten the job by now. The only other reason he wouldn't get it is that he never managed a club with huge European success. Anyway, one other name I thought quite useful is Big Sam. He probably wouldn't want it now, but it would be England's steal to get him. Politics aside, he probably will whip all the players into shape and get some decent results.

Klinnsman is actually an interesting proposition, but it's probably a no-brainer. Would he change his lifestyle for England? Unless his wife migrates to England! He didn't do that for Germany, much less likely for England. Another interesting name is Start Pearce. No way, dude. He'll be out of his pool. He is a good coach, but England might end up getting a tactical director. He is sound in his strategies, but he probably needs more experience. Of course, he managed City well without cash, although he could have done better. Anyway, unless the FA extends their list, they might end up running out of candidates! Remember, Scolari was scared off by the media...Booooo! They might end up getting.........................Mike Bassett!
